Nurse practitioners and physician assistants: An underestimated workforce for older adults with cancer
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society May 09, 2019
Coombs LA, et al. - Researchers undertook this observational, cross-sectional study in Medicare beneficiaries who received ambulatory care for any solid or hematologic malignancies in order to assess the composition of the US provider workforce for adults aged > 65 years with cancer. They also investigated if differences could be seen in patients who received care from different providers (eg, nurse practitioners [NPs], physician assistants [PAs], and specialty physicians). The largest group consisted of NPs, followed by hematology/oncology physicians, PAs, medical oncologists, gynecological oncologists, and hematologists. Among older adults with cancer receiving care, a large proportion received care from NPs and PAs, especially those who lived in rural settings and in the southern United States.
