Nuisance symptoms in total joint replacement: Prevalence and impact on patient satisfaction
Journal of Arthroplasty Nov 05, 2019
Wood TJ, et al. - In this prospective survey study, researchers identified type and prevalence of hip/knee total joint replacement (TJR) nuisance symptoms (eg, localized pain, swelling, instability, stiffness) and effect on patient satisfaction at one-year postoperative. Using descriptive statistics, survey responses were analyzed. Study participants included 545 TJR patients that completed the survey; 335 knees (61%), 210 hips (39%). Difficulty kneeling, limited ability to run/jump, and numbness around incision were the included most commonly reported nuisance symptoms and associated impact on satisfaction among knees. Limited ability to run/jump, thigh muscle pain, and limp when walking were the most commonly reported nuisance symptoms and associated impact on satisfaction among hips. Overall, the authors concluded that post hip/knee TJR nuisance symptoms are very common. Despite the high prevalence, there is minimal impact on overall satisfaction and high patient satisfaction. Careful preoperative advice on prevalence is prudent and will assist in establishing realistic expectations after TJR.
