Now and then: A 10-year comparison of young people in residential substance use disorder treatment receiving group dialectical behaviour therapy
BMC Psychiatry Jul 24, 2021
Marceau EM, Holmes G, Cutts J, et al. - The global health priorities include reduction in substance use in youth. In this study, two cohorts from the same 12-week residential substance use disorder (SUD) facility were compared over a 10 year period: Cohort A (2008–2009) and Cohort B (2018–2020). In the program, the vital components remained the same with the primary treatment being dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) plus residential milieu. In baseline to end-of-treatment comparisons, they observed overall higher levels of global psychiatric symptoms in the current Cohort B, but both groups had reduction in psychiatric symptoms, and showed comparable improvement in confidence to resist substance use. Performing analysis in longitudinal data from the current Cohort B, they identified significant reductions in substance use severity from baseline to 6-month follow-up, which were sustained at 12-month follow-up, and improvements in quality of life from baseline to end-of-treatment.
