Novel treatment for mild and moderate VPI using implantable AlloDerm for posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation: Case series and review of surgical techniques
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Aug 09, 2019
Shetty KR, et al. - Researchers presents this case series of four patients with mild or moderate velopharyngeal insufficiency who were treated with a novel technique using implantable AlloDerm in the posterior pharyngeal wall at a large, safety-net hospital in New England from 2000 to 2019. Sufficient follow-up data were available for three of these patients. Following the procedure, subjective improvements in symptoms were reported in all three. One month following the procedure, implant extrusion was observed in one patient leading to its subsequent removal. Ultimately, this study supports the utility of implantable AlloDerm for posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation as a low-risk method for treating mild to moderate velopharyngeal insufficiency.
