Novel treatment for mild and moderate velopharyngeal insufficiency using implantable AlloDerm for posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation and review of surgical repair techniques
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 21, 2019
Shetty KR, et al. - In this case series, researchers characterized a novel technique using implantable AlloDerm to repair the posterior pharyngeal wall to treat mild and moderate velopharyngeal insufficiency. Study participants included four individuals with mild or moderate velopharyngeal insufficiency who were treated with implantable AlloDerm in the posterior pharyngeal wall at a large, safety-net hospital in New England from 2000 to 2019. According to results, sufficient follow-up data were available for three of these individuals. Following the procedure, subjective improvements in symptoms were reported in all three. One month following the procedure, implant extrusion was observed in one patient leading to its subsequent removal. Eventually, a useful low-risk approach for treating mild to moderate velopharyngeal insufficiency is implantable AlloDerm for posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation.
