Normocytic anaemia is associated with systemic inflammation and poorer survival in patients with colorectal cancer treated with curative intent
International Journal of Colorectal Disease Dec 07, 2018
McSorley ST, et al. - In patients undergoing curative treatment for colorectal cancer, researchers characterized the prevalence and prognostic impact of normocytic anaemia. For bowel cancer screening, 395,097 people were invited. They were already diagnosed with colorectal cancer and treated, from April 2009 to March 2011. Patients were categorized as having microcytic anaemia, normocytic anaemia or neither. They used the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) to quantify preoperative systemic inflammation. Findings suggested an association of normocytic anaemia with systemic inflammation and poorer cancer specific survival (CSS). It was also assumed that inflammation might be responsible for both anemia and disease recurrence, and targeting this process might recover both.
