Noninvasive peripheral vascular function and atrial fibrillation in the general population

Journal of Hypertension Apr 03, 2019

Börschel CS, et al. - Researchers investigated the potential association of noninvasively measured conduit artery function and peripheral vascular reactivity with atrial fibrillation (AF) in 15,010 participants of the population-based Gutenberg Health Study (mean age: 55 ± 11 years; 50.5% men). They analyzed flow-mediated dilation and peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT). Findings from age- and sex-adjusted logistic regression analyses demonstrated the relation of only baseline brachial artery diameter and PAT ratio to AF. Those with AF had compromised peripheral vascular function. However, age and classical risk factors mediated the observed links. No improvement in the discriminatory ability for AF was noted in relation to the use of noninvasive vascular function measures.
