Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, circulating ketone bodies and all-cause mortality in a general population-based cohort
European Journal of Clinical Investigation Jun 17, 2021
Post A, Garcia E, van den Berg EH, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the link between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and circulating ketone bodies and ascertained the extent to which NAFLD and circulating ketone bodies are related to all-cause mortality. Among participants of the general population-based PREVEND study, they recorded plasma ketone bodies. They considered a fatty liver index (FLI) ≥60 as a substitute of NAFLD. In this study sample of 6,297 participants aged 54 ± 12 years, increased FLI was present in 1,970 (31%). It was found that participants with suspected NAFLD had elevated circulating ketone bodies. An elevated risk of all-cause mortality was observed in relation to both suspected NAFLD and higher circulating ketone bodies.
