Non-retrieved inferior vena cava filters: Causes and long-term follow-up
European Journal of Internal Medicine Jan 09, 2021
Ribas J, Alba E, Pascual-González Y, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective observational study to evaluate reasons that preclude retrieval of temporary inferior vena cava (IVC) filters as well as to assess long-term results and reasons for death in patients with indwelling filters. This analysis involved all consecutive patients undergoing IVC filter insertion from January 2009 through December 2018. There were 271 patients with a mean age of 63.8 years. Experts noted 66% of temporary filters were retrieved. Lack of planning / follow-up was identified as the primary preventable reason for non-retrieval of temporary IVC filters. To enhance retrieval rates, execution of structured follow-up programs is advised. In patients with indwelling filters, cancer was reported as the predominant cause of death and no link was identified between extended anticoagulation and survival.
