Non-invasive brain stimulation in chronic orofacial pain: A systematic review
Journal of Pain Research Aug 11, 2018
Herrero Babiloni A, et al. - Via performing a systematic review, researchers assessed the efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in reducing clinical pain intensity in chronic orofacial pain (OFP) disorders. In addition, they delineated adverse effects, duration of relief, and TMS/tDCS methodologies used in chronic OFP disorders. Data analysis of 228 patients with OFP disorders including trigeminal neuralgia, trigeminal neuropathy, burning mouth syndrome, atypical facial pain, and temporomandibular disorders was conducted. Findings suggest that both techniques are efficacious in providing significant pain relief. More durable effects were noted with more number of sessions. They recommend performing additional research to reduce bias, improve quality, and characterize optimal brain stimulation parameters to promote their efficacy.
