Non-curative treatment of patients with oral tongue squamous-cell carcinoma
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology May 12, 2019
Mroueh R, et al. - In this population-based study including patients treated with non-curative intent for oral tongue squamous-cell carcinoma (OTSCC) during a 12-year period at the HUS Helsinki University Hospital (Helsinki, Finland), researchers focused on the used non-curative treatment modalities and patient survival. They identified 82 patients. In 26 patients (7% of all patients diagnosed with OTSCC during the study period), a non-curative treatment decision was made at presentation without any previous treatment. Following the non-curative treatment decision, 3.7 months (median 2 and range 0–26) was the average survival time. Findings support a prompt initiation of all non-curative measures in this patient population because of the short mean survival time after decision for treatment with non-curative intent and notable symptom burden.
