Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in morbidly obese individuals undergoing bariatric surgery: Prevalence and effect of the pre-bariatric very low calorie diet
Obesity Surgery Nov 07, 2017
Schwenger KJP, et al. - This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of simple steatosis (SS) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in obese individuals undergoing bariatric surgery (BSx) post-very low calorie diet (VLCD) and assess biochemical markers pre- and post-VLCD in a subgroup of patients. Compared to published reports, post-VLCD lower prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and NASH was observed, with almost 25% of the patients having a normal liver. With VLCD, the groups were similar regarding metabolic and clinical changes, suggesting that pre-VLCD factors may affect liver histology.
