Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the incidence of myocardial infarction: A cohort study
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Nov 09, 2019
Sinn DH, Kang D, Chang Y, et al. - Through a retrospective cohort study involving 111,492 people over age 40 who did not have a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), liver disease, or cancer at baseline and participated in a regular health screening exam between 2003 and 2013, experts assessed the relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the risk of incident myocardial infarction. Irrespective of established risk factors, NAFLD was related to a heightened incidence of myocardial infarction. Moreover, in people with and without evidence of more advanced NAFLD, this relationship was comparable as designated by the NAFLD fibrosis score. Thus, people with NAFLD may require more cautious monitoring and early management to minimize the risk of myocardial infarction.
