Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the development of reflux esophagitis: A cohort study
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Apr 02, 2018
Min YW, et al. - Authors attempted to inspect if non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome increased the risk of incident reflux esophagitis in men and women without reflux esophagitis or other upper gastrointestinal diseases at baseline who underwent health checkup examinations. Findings displayed that the cumulative incidences of reflux esophagitis for subjects without and with NAFLD were 9.6% and 13.8%, respectively. No independent correlation was illustrated between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease severity with the risk of the development of reflux esophagitis. Nevertheless, reflux esophagitis appeared to be mainly the result of increased body mass index commonly related to NAFLD.
