Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk of incident chronic kidney disease: An updated meta-analysis
Gut Dec 14, 2020
Mantovani A, Petracca G, Beatrice G, et al. - Researchers quantified the degree to which non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is related to risk of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) by analyzing relevant observational studies in this meta-analysis. PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were explored from January 2000 to August 2020 and 13 studies including 1,222,032 people (28.1% with NAFLD) and 33,840 cases of incident CKD stage ≥ 3 over a median follow-up of 9.7 years were identified and analyzed. Findings demonstrated a significant correlation of NAFLD with an approximately 1.45-fold increased long-term risk of incident CKD stage ≥ 3, independent of age, sex, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and other conventional CKD risk factors. To assess the link between the severity of NAFLD and risk of incident CKD, further investigations are required.
