Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and increased risk of incident extrahepatic cancers: A meta-analysis of observational cohort studies
Gut Mar 15, 2021
Mantovani A, Petracca G, Beatrice G, et al. - By analyzing relevant observational studies in this meta-analysis, researchers sought to quantify the magnitude of the link between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and risk of extrahepatic malignancies. These studies were identified from PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Overall, the analysis involved 10 cohort studies comprising 182,202 middle-aged people (24.8% with NAFLD) and 8,485 incident cases of extrahepatic cancers at different sites over a median observation of 5.8 years. According to findings of this large meta-analysis, a moderately increased long-term risk of suffering from extrahepatic cancers was observed, over a median of approximately 6 years (particularly GI cancers, breast cancer and gynaecological cancers), in relation to NAFLD.
