Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and clinical outcomes in chronic kidney disease
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Mar 10, 2019
Chinnadurai R, et al. - In a large secondary care chronic kidney disease (CKD) cohort including 1148 patients, researchers determined the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), as well as its influence on cardiovascular and renal outcomes and mortality by using Cox regression analysis and linear regression analysis. They reported 17.9% prevalence of NAFLD. Post-scanning, participants were followed-up for a median duration of 5.4 years. The median estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 33.5 mL/min/1.73 m2. Even an advanced CKD cohort with high comorbidity demonstrated a robust independent link between NAFLD and cardiovascular events. No association of NAFLD with all-cause mortality or CKD progression was evident. In higher risk CKD patients, routine screening for NAFLD may be warranted for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention.
