Non-albuminuric reduced eGFR phenotype in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jul 12, 2019

Di Bonito P, et al. - In young people with type 1 diabetes (T1DM), researchers examined factors correlated with non-albuminuric reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (NAeGFR-) phenotype. The study sample consisted of 140 outpatient diabetic children, aged 7 to 18 years, consecutively observed in the period 2016-2017. According to this cross-sectional study, the prevalence of NAeGFR- phenotype was 38% and is associated with male sex, high uric acid (UA) levels, other autoimmune diseases, and low-grade inflammation. In order to intervene in diabetic youth more likely prone to develop progressive renal impairment, pediatricians should monitor both eGFR and UA early.
