Non‐selective beta‐blockers increase overall and liver mortality in alcoholic cirrhosis with MELD ≥ 12 over 5 years of follow‐up

Liver International Sep 30, 2020

Calès P, Bertrais S, Boursier J, et al. - In 258 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, researchers assessed the influence of non‐cardioselective beta‐blockers (NSBBs) on mortality according to liver severity and mortality cause. In this retro‐prospective cohort, 129 of the participants were NSBB‐treated, 129 were controls. Higher MELD, more frequent previous gastrointestinal bleeding, large esophageal varices, and lower heart rate were significant baseline differences observed in the NSBB group. According to findings, overall and liver survival are significantly aggravated when MELD is ≥ 12 in alcoholic cirrhosis with rather high propranolol doses.
