Non‐esterified fatty acids and risks of frailty, disability, and mobility limitation in older adults: The Cardiovascular Health Study
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Sep 27, 2020
Ahiawodzi P, Djousse L, Ix JH, et al. - Researchers used a population‐based cohort of older individuals to examine the links between non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) and incident frailty, disability, and mobility limitation. This study involved 4,710 Cardiovascular Health Study participants. During a 4‐year span, frailty developed in 42 participants and pre‐frailty occurred in 510. During follow‐up, 1,720 cases of disability as well as 1,225 cases of mobility limitation were reported. In a dose‐dependent manner, NEFAs were shown to be positively related to higher risks of incident frailty, disability, and mobility limitation. Findings demonstrated a significant correlation of circulating NEFAs with frailty, disability, and mobility limitation in older adults. These data show the wide spectrum of adverse health problems related to NEFA in older adults.
