Nodal and distant metastases in sinonasal mucosal melanoma: A population-based analysis
The Laryngoscope May 15, 2019
Low CM, et al. - In this retrospective database review, researchers examined how nodal metastases and distant metastases at diagnosis influence overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) in patients with sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM). They identified 328 cases of SNMM, with the most often seen sinonasal anatomic location being the nasal cavity (73.0% of patients), followed by the maxillary sinus (15.7% of patients). As per observations, this malignant neoplasm is a rare pathologic entity with a poor prognosis. Negative prognosis for OS and DSS was seen with the presence of nodal and distant metastases at diagnosis. They suggest including these factors in the development of new models of risk stratification and to inform treatment strategies and surveillance patterns.
