No radiographic index predicts difficult intubation using the Optiscope in cervical spine surgery patients: A retrospective study
BMC Anesthesiology Mar 06, 2020
Oh H, et al. - Given the possible utility of the Optiscope for intubation with minimal neck motion, researchers here analyzed preoperative radiographic images for radiographic predictors of difficult intubation using the Optiscope. For radiographic indices, they assessed preoperative cervical spine lateral X-ray and MRI images of 184 who underwent intubation with the Optiscope under manual in-line cervical stabilization for cervical spine surgery. Difficult intubation was reported in 47 patients indicating an incidence of 25.5% using the Optiscope under manual in-line cervical stabilization. Outcome analysis revealed no significant predictor of difficult intubation with the Optiscope among the measured radiographic indices. High BMI and short SMD were identified as predictive of difficult intubation with the Optiscope, however, their discrimination power was weak.
