No impact on the incidence rate of adenoidectomy 1998-2014 on a national level in Denmark by the use of nasal steroid and the introduction of pneumococcal vaccines
Clinical Otolaryngology Nov 26, 2019
Grønlund C, et al. - Using data from Danish registries, researchers conducted a nationwide, population-based, retrospective, interrupted time-series analysis to explain trends in incidence rates of adenoidectomy in children in Denmark from 1998-2014 and to examine for possible explanatory factors like intranasal steroids and pneumococcal vaccination. According to results, 174,557 adenoidectomies, distributed among 153,022 children, were identified. The incidence rate of adenoidectomy in children in Denmark has been among the highest in the world with about 11 per 1,000 person-years since 1998-2004. From 2004-2009 a decline to 7.9 was observed. On a national level, no inverse correlation was found between adenoidectomy incidence rates and intranasal steroid, nor the implementation of the pneumococcal vaccine. Similar to adenoidectomy, the amount of intranasal steroids used in children in Denmark was negligible.
