No causal effects of serum urate levels on the risk of chronic kidney disease: A Mendelian randomization study

PLoS Medicine Feb 06, 2019

Jordan DM, et al. - Authors examined genome-wide association data, electronic-medical-record (EMR)-linked UK Biobank data, and population-based cohorts—all in people of European ancestry—to assess the causal outcomes of serum urate (SU) levels on the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in this Mendelian randomization (MR) study. They implemented multiple datasets to perform Mendelian randomization analyses, including meta-analyses performed across multiple population-based cohorts, four individual population-based cohorts, and the large EMR-linked UK Biobank. They noticed that SU had a causal effect on the risk of gout; however, no significant causal connection was noted between SU level and risk of CKD across all datasets.
