No association with cardiac death after sepsis: A nationwide observational cohort study
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 01, 2019
De Geer L, et al. - Using a nationwide register-based cohort from the Swedish Intensive Care Registry, researchers determined cardiac outcome in sepsis. For this purpose, they evaluated causes of death up to 2 years post-treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU) in 13,669 sepsis and septic shock patients. A control group, which consisted of 6,582 subjects, was matched by age, sex, and severity of illness. None of the participants had a preceding severe cardiac disease. No matches were found for 7,087 severe sepsis and septic shock patients. Using the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare's Cause of Death Registry, they obtained information regarding causes of death up to 2 years after ICU admission. In patients with severe sepsis or septic shock, findings revealed no link to an increased risk of death related to cardiac disease compared with other ICU patients with similar severity of illness.
