No association between head injury with loss of consciousness and Alzheimer's disease pathology – Findings from The University of Manchester Longitudinal Study of Cognition in Normal Healthy Old Age
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry May 04, 2019
Robinson AC, et al. - The relationship between head injury with loss of consciousness (HI-LOC) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in the elderly was elucidated in this work. Researchers ascertained HI-LOC history in participants in The University of Manchester Longitudinal Study of Cognition in Normal Healthy Old Age and assessed AD pathology in the donated brains of 110 of these individuals using consensus guidelines. Incidence of HI-LOC is not correlated with regional AD pathology or any of the three recognized measures of the neuropathology linked with AD (CERAD score, Thal phase or Braak stage). Cognitive impairment correlated with head injury may be due to other routes of damage, such as diffuse axonal injury or Lewy body pathology.
