Ninety-day mortality after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer: A population-based comparison between rural and urban patients
Head & Neck Jul 29, 2021
Schlijper R, Bos S, Hamilton SN, et al. - Researchers investigated if there exist disparities in 90-day mortality between patients living in rural and urban areas, because lower access to supportive care services in rural areas could lead to higher mortality. This study involved all patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) managed between 1998 and 2014 with radiotherapy in British Columbia. Total 5,554 patients were involved, of which 68% lived in urban centers. For rural vs urban patients, 90-day mortality was 3.0% and 3.9%, respectively. Findings revealed absence of a significant link between 90-day mortality and rurality, after controlling for potentially confounding factors, in these patients who underwent radiotherapy for HNC in British Columbia.
