Nightmares and suicide risk in psychiatric patients: The roles of hopelessness and male depressive symptoms
Psychiatry Research Mar 28, 2018
Lamis DA, et al. - Researchers here examined hopelessness and male depressive symptoms as risk factors for suicide while considering the frequency of and impairment due to nightmares. In this work, patients who reported monthly to weekly nightmares showed higher levels of hopelessness, male depressive symptoms, and suicide risk compared to those who reported yearly or no nightmares. In patients who reported monthly to weekly nightmares vs those who reported yearly or no nightmares, male depressive symptoms significantly mediated the relation between hopelessness and suicide risk. Furthermore, impairment due to nightmares was observed to have a significant and positive association with male depression, but not hopelessness or suicide risk.
