Night shift work, long working hours and dementia: A longitudinal study of the Danish Work Environment Cohort Study

BMJ Open May 31, 2019

Nabe-Nielsen K, et al. - In this longitudinal study involving 3,435 occupationally active men and women from the general working population, researchers examined the impact of night-shift work and long working hours on dementia. During a mean of 9.8 years of follow-up, 85 dementia cases were identified. In participants working < 37 hours/week or ≥ 45 hours/week, no indications of a higher risk of dementia was noted. Investigators found no evidence to support that, in general, night-shift work or long hours of work increased the risk of dementia. However, in specific subgroups, they found a higher risk of dementia (ie, permanent night workers and staff with moderately longer weekly working hours than the standard).
