Newborns and preterm infants at term equivalent age: A semi-quantitative assessment of cerebral maturity
NeuroImage: Clinical Oct 27, 2019
Pittet MP, et al. -Using 3T MRI T2-weighted brain sequences of 21 full-term and 41 preterm infants (< 32 weeks), researchers examined the visibility and the pattern of these transient fetal compartments in healthy term newborns in comparison with preterm infants at term similar age in order to study whether they could be incorporated in a new MRI score system. In newborns, brain transient fetal structures could be evaluated on regular T2-weighted MRI. However, their appearance varies between term and preterm babies. Nonetheless, with both lingered and expedited maturation patterns in preterm infants, the results imply a more complicated situation. Moreover, it is yet ascertained whether these variations could be biomarkers of the future neurodevelopment of preterm infants.
