New‐onset atrial fibrillation and outcomes following isolated coronary artery bypass surgery: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Clinical Cardiology Jul 25, 2020

Kerwin M, Saado J, Pan J, et al. - Whether new‐onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) would be related to raised risk of stroke and death, even in patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), was investigated by performing a systematic review and meta‐analysis. Two independent investigators performed a blinded review of studies from MEDLINE, CENTRAL, and Web of Science. Experts focused on stroke, 30‐day/hospital death, long‐term cardiovascular death, and long‐term (>1 year) all‐cause death. There were 4,461 studies, of which, 19 (n = 129,628) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The reported NOAF incidence ranged from 15% to 36%. Overall, findings revealed a high incidence of NOAF after isolated CABG. NOAF was shown to be correlated with increased stroke rate as well as mortality. Improved outcomes could be achieved via early identification as well as treatment of NOAF.
