Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio predicts acute appendicitis and distinguishes between complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
American Journal of Surgery May 02, 2019
Hajibandeh S, et al. - Researchers examined the predictive value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for acute appendicitis. In addition, they evaluated if uncomplicated appendicitis could be distinguished from complicated using NLR. They included 17 studies, enrolling 8,914 patients in this work. For appendicitis, the cut-off value of NLR was 4.7 with sensitivity of 88.89 % and specificity of 90.91% with AUC of 0.96. Findings support that both diagnosis and severity of appendicitis could be predicted using NLR value. In addition, this may assist in prioritizing cases for surgery, in monitoring conservatively treated patients and in patients who do not routinely undergo CT scan (pregnant or paediatric patients).
