Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio as indicator to severe complication after pancreaticoduodenectomy or distal pancreatectomy
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 21, 2019
Ida M, et al. - In this retrospective review of 208 patients with a median age of 71 years who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy or distal pancreatectomy at a Japanese tertiary hospital, researchers assessed post-operative complications in relation to pre-operative hematologic markers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and prognostic nutritional index. The excluded patients were those who failed to complete the operation and those who had an additional procedure. They focused on reoperation and unplanned intensive care unit admission before first discharge (primary outcome) and on length of hospital stay (secondary outcome). Findings revealed a significant association of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and blood loss volume with post-operative complications. Longer hospital stays were reported in relation to post-operative complications.
