Neuropsychological and socioeconomic outcomes in adult survivors of pediatric low-grade glioma
Cancer Jun 29, 2019
Ris MD, et al. - Adult survivors of pediatric low-grade gliomas (n=181) in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study were recruited by experts in order to assess long-term neuropsychological and socioeconomic status (SES) outcomes. In comparison to survivors treated only surgically (who scored lower than siblings), survivors treated with surgery and radiotherapy achieved lower marks for estimated IQ. For every result other than attention/processing speed, survivors who were diagnosed at younger ages had low scores. Survivors who were treated with surgery+RT had lower occupation scores, lower income, and less education for SES outcomes vs those who were treated with surgery only. Survivors treated at younger ages with radiotherapy had worse neuropsychological and SES outcomes decades after treatment. Therefore, lifelong monitoring of survivors of pediatric low-grade gliomas could be needed.
