Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is effective in strengthening the quadriceps muscle after anterior cruciate ligament surgery

Hauger AV, et al. – Researchers analyzed data comparing quadriceps strength or physical function in patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery and received either standard physical therapy alone or a combination of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) plus standard physical therapy. Findings demonstrated that in the early post–operative period, a significant improvement in quadriceps strength and physical function was noticed in those who received NMES in addition to standard physical therapy versus those treated with standard physical therapy alone.
