Neuromelanin locus coeruleus MRI contrast in migraine with aura

Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Feb 26, 2020

Gollion C, Arribarat G, Ruidavets JB, et al. - Given a possible activation of the locus coeruleus (LC: one of the brainstem nuclei) in migraine attack and its containment of neuromelanin content that has been suggested to reflect previous LC activation, researchers here examined LC MRI contrast in patients with migraine with aura (MWA) and its relationship with migraine features. In this matched cohort study, 23 MWA patients aged 30-55 and without comorbidity were compared with 23 gender- and age-matched healthy controls. MWA patients and controls showed no difference in neuromelanin LC contrast with both the INTER method and the UNION method. Furthermore, they identified no correlations between neuromelanin LC contrast and migraine features (duration of migraine and frequency of attacks). Outcomes do not support the utility of neuromelanin LC contrast as a biomarker of MA.
