Neurocognitive and psychosocial outcomes in adult survivors of childhood soft-tissue sarcoma: A report from the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort
Cancer Jan 29, 2020
Olsson IT, Brinkman TM, Wang M, et al. - To define long-term neurocognitive results in survivors of childhood soft-tissue sarcoma, researchers conducted this study among 150 survivors and 349 community controls who were examined via comprehensive neuropsychological examination, echocardiography, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, endocrine evaluation, and physical examination. Lower performance on measures of verbal reasoning mathematics and long-term memory were observed among survivors vs controls and population norms. Poorer verbal reasoning, reading, and patient-reported vitality were noted in relation to cumulative anthracycline exposure (per 100 mg/m2). Poorer mathematics related to neurologic and neurosensory chronic conditions was also reported. A link was identified between better cognitive performance and higher social attainment. Findings revealed the risk of neurocognitive problems as well as poor health-related quality of life related to anthracycline therapy and chronic health conditions among long-term survivors of soft-tissue sarcoma.
