Nerve ablation after bronchial thermoplasty and sustained improvement in severe asthma
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Feb 14, 2018
Facciolongo N, et al. - Bronchial thermoplasty (BT) is a non-pharmacological intervention for severe asthma. Herein, the analysis of the impact of BT on nerve fibers and inflammatory components in the bronchial mucosa at 1-year post-BT revealed earlier occurrence of reduction of nerve fibers in epithelium and in airway smooth muscle (ASM), which persisted at one year after BT. Researchers proposed that nerve ablation may contribute to mediate the beneficial effects of BT in severe asthma.
