Nephrotoxicity following treatment of periprosthetic joint infection with antibiotic-loaded cement spacers
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 20, 2018
Edelstein AI, et al. - Herein, the prevalence and risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) after the placement of an antibiotic-loaded cement spacer (ACS) were assessed by the experts for the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Results demonstrated that 27% patients fitted in the criteria of risk, injury, failure, loss of kidney function, and end-stage kidney disease (RIFLE) for kidney injury and 5% patients fitted in the RIFLE criteria for kidney failure. For the development of acute kidney injury following placement of antibiotic-loaded cement spacers, close monitoring of patients was recommended.
