Neonatal outcome in 29 pregnant women with COVID-19: A retrospective study in Wuhan, China
PLoS Medicine Jul 31, 2020
Wu YT, Liu J, Xu JJ, et al. - Researchers investigated the outcome of neonates born to pregnant women with COVID-19 infection. They performed retrospective study of 30 neonates born to 29 pregnant COVID-19-infected women (1 set of twins). Findings suggest development of COVID-19 (5/30) or pneumonia-like radiological features (17/30) in a considerable number of, but not all, neonates born to COVID-19-infected women. They emphasize not underestimating intrapartum precaution, and highlight the value of considering intrauterine transmission. Necrotizing enterocolitis developed in three neonates, although none of them were premature, suggesting vulnerability to develop necrotizing enterocolitis among term neonates born to COVID-19-infected women.
