Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is associated with more anemia and perioperative blood transfusions than primary debulking surgery in women with advanced stage ovarian cancer
Gynecologic Oncology Jun 27, 2018
O'Shea A, et al. - In this single institution review, researchers compared the prevalence of anemia and perioperative blood transfusions in patients undergoing treatment for advanced ovarian cancer with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) or primary debulking surgery (PDS). Using student t-test and chi square analysis, they compared continuous variables and binary variables, respectively. They found that anemia at diagnosis was more likely to be detected in women selected for NACT. Moreover, these patients became progressively anemic during NACT. Although less blood loss occurred during debulking surgery, NACT patients vs patients undergoing PDS had more blood transfusions perioperatively. This can allow therapeutic intervention during NACT to correct anemia prior to interval debulking surgery.
