Neck muscle mass index as a predictor of post-laryngectomy wound complications
Annals of Allergy, Rhinology, & Laryngology Sep 16, 2018
Bozkurt G, et al. - Researchers retrospectively analyzed 60 advanced laryngeal cancer patients who had total laryngectomy to investigate the association between paravertebral muscle cross-sectional area (PVM CSA) at the third vertebra (C3) level and complications after total laryngectomy. Images of cross-sectional areas of paravertebral neck muscles were obtained preoperatively using computerized tomography. Outcomes revealed a significant difference in PVM CSA between complication and no complication groups, suggesting its utility in identifying patients at higher risk of postoperative wound complications following total laryngectomy and who may especially benefit from preoperative optimization of nutritional status.
