Near-simultaneous intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and all-cause mortality: A cohort study
Intensive Care Medicine Sep 23, 2019
Kashiouris MG, Sessler CN, Qayyum R, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers investigated whether the arrival of multiple admissions nearly at the same time resulting in excessively strained ICU teams can lead to unfavorable patient outcomes. Participants were consecutive adult patients admitted to an academic medical ICU of a tertiary referral center. Enrollment of 13,234 consecutive ICU admissions was done throughout the study duration. Elapsed time since the last admission of < 55 min was reported in one-fourth of the admissions. Findings revealed a frequent occurrence of near-simultaneous ICU admissions (NSA). In this study, the associations of NSA with a dose-dependent impact on death, length of stay, and odds of home vs nursing facility discharge were evident.
