Natural and synthetic cannabinoids for agitation and aggression in Alzheimer’s disease: A meta-analysis
The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Feb 06, 2019
Ruthirakuhan M, et al. - Researchers undertook this meta-analysis investigating the efficacy of cannabinoids on agitation and aggression in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Cannabinoids as a group showed no effect on agitation in patients with AD, though there was significant heterogeneity. Synthetic cannabinoids seem to have a potential benefit. A trend for a greater difference in agitation with synthetic cannabinoids over tetrahydrocannabinol was observed. They recommend closely monitoring safety, given the association of cannabinoid treatment with increased sedation.
