Nationwide survey on training and device utilization during tracheal intubation in French intensive care units
Annals of Intensive Care Jan 11, 2020
Martin M, Decamps P, Seguin A, et al. - In order to analyze intubation practices as well as device availability in French ICUs, researchers performed an online nationwide survey inquiring physicians in French ICUs through an anonymous 26-item questionnaire. They sent a single questionnaire to either the head or the intubation expert at each ICU. Overall 257 ICUs participated, of those, 180 (70%) returned the completed questionnaire. A difficult intubation trolley, an intubation protocol, a capnography device, a laryngeal mask, front-of-neck access capabilities, and a videolaryngoscope was present in 94.4%, 74.5%, 92.2%, 91.6%, 97.2%, and in 76.6% of the participating ICUs, respectively. Lack of full proficiency with orotracheal intubation was seen in approximately half the intubators in French ICUs. Findings revealed inadequate access to modern training methods such as simulation. Most ICUs had a videolaryngoscope, but it was reserved for difficult intubations.
