Nationwide incidence of metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in England
JAMA Mar 20, 2019
Venables ZC, et al. - Investigators assessed 76,977 patients to measure the national incidence of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and metastatic cSCC (mcSCC) in England. They observed increased primary cSCC tumor count in older, white male subjects in lower deprivation quintiles. They also noted a significant increase in the risk of metastasis in subjects of age 80-89 years, 90 years or older, male, immunosuppressed, and in higher deprivation quintiles. They found primary cSCC located on the ear and lip at the highest risk of metastasis. After a maximum follow-up of 36 months, 1.1% of women and 2.4% of men with a cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma developed metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
