Nationwide frequency, sequential trends, and impact of comorbid mental health disorders on hospitalizations, outcomes, and healthcare resource utilization in adult congenital heart disease

The American Journal of Cardiology Feb 05, 2020

Desai R, Patel K, Dave H, et al. - Researchers utilized the National Inpatient Sample (2007-2014) to determine the frequency as well as patterns of mental health disorders (MHD) among adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) hospitalizations (stratification by age, gender, and race). In ACHD cohorts, with (MHD+) vs without MHD (MHD-), demographics and comorbidities were analyzed, as well as the rate and trends of all-cause in-hospital death, disposition, mean length of stay, and hospitalization costs. A coexistent MHD (anxiety, depression, mood disorder, or psychosis) was identified in 11,709 of 85,029 ACHD patient encounters. The reported frequency of cardiac/extra-cardiac comorbidities was higher in the ACHD-MHD+ cohort. A rise from 10.3% to 17.5% was reported in trends in the prevalence of coexistent MHD from 2007 to 2014, with a consistently higher prevalence among females vs males. In whites and Hispanics, a rise in hospitalization trends with MHD was noted. Findings highlighted rising trends of MHD, healthcare resource use as well as a higher frequency of comorbidities in patients having ACHD.
