Nationwide effect of high procedure volume in lung cancer surgery on in-house mortality in Germany
Lung Cancer Sep 03, 2020
Baum P, Diers J, Haag J, et al. - In a nationwide setting, researchers assessed if hospital caseload volume had any influence on survival after lung cancer resection in this retrospective study looking at individual hospital caseload volume of every inpatient case in Germany. They analyzed nationwide hospital discharge data in Germany between 2014 and 2017, with 121,837 patients, of whom 36,051 (29.6%) had surgical anatomic resection. They found in-house death ranged from 2.1% in very high-volume centers to 4.0% in very low-volume hospitals. Decreased in-house mortality, less complications, and reduced failure to rescue rates were achieved in hospitals with high volumes of lung cancer resections; a higher ratio of complex procedures was also seen in hospitals reporting higher volumes of lung cancer resections.
