Nationwide comparison of long-term survival and cardiovascular morbidity after acute aortic aneurysm repair in patients with and without type 2 diabetes
Journal of Vascular Surgery May 10, 2019
Taimour S, et al. - Researchers conducted this nationwide observational cohort study of patients in the Swedish Vascular Registry and the Swedish National Diabetes Register to compare diabetic vs nondiabetic patients undergoing acute repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) regarding mortality and cardiovascular morbidity. Findings revealed lower rates of both total and cardiovascular mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) after acute AAA repair vs those without DM. However, there was no difference between the groups regarding rates of cardiovascular events, acute myocardial infarction, and stroke. Putative protective effects of DM on the aortic wall may explain this finding.
