Nationwide burden of sudden cardiac death: A study of 54,028 deaths in Denmark
Heart Rhythm May 12, 2021
Lynge TH, Risgaard B, Banner J, et al. - In the present study, the researchers estimated the sudden cardiac death (SCD) burden across all ages in Denmark and compared this with other common causes of death. In 2010, all deaths in Denmark (population 5.5 million) were manually reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Autopsy reports, death certificates, and information from nationwide health registries have been systematically examined to identify all SCD in 2010. SCD was responsible for up to 13% of all deaths. Nearly half of all SCD occurred in people who had no prior history of cardiovascular disease. As a result, optimizing risk stratification and SCD prevention in the general population should be a top priority.
